About The Klipsch RP-404C Centre Speaker
With its Hybrid Tractrix horn and Cerametallic woofers, the Klipsch RP-404C centre channel speaker is built to effortlessly deliver clear, powerful Klipsch sound and put you right in the front row for exciting cinematic sound.
The Klipsch RP-404C is part of the Reference Premiere range and delivers clear, crisp, dialogue with outstanding bass. It is definitely considered to be a 'large' centre-channel speaker and features four 102mm (4") woofers that have Klipsch's distinctive, copper-coloured Cerametallic material. Made with an anodised aluminium, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodising process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.
With the Reference Premiere Series, Klipsch also gave these woofers a newly developed titanium voice coil former that allows more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response. Look around the back, and you'll see that instead of the conventional round port tube found on many speakers, Klipsch uses a Tractrix horn-shaped opening for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion. The 404C can handle up to 125 Watts RMS and 500 Watts of peak power.
A redesigned Tractrix Horn utilises a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed moulded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible. These 90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns provide a wider sweet spot while maintaining controlled directivity of the sound.
Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) Titanium Diaphragm Tweeter: Behind the Tractrix Horn lies a 25mm (1") titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension minimises distortion for enhanced, detailed performance. The new vented tweeter housing reduces standing waves that create unwanted harmonics, resulting in enhanced detail and clarity in high frequency reproduction.
Crossover Network: The Klipsch RP-404C speaker's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies of 500Hz and 1,500Hz offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.
Bass Reflex MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch RP-404C employs a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing Tractrix port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. Utilising Tractrix geometry, the all new Reference Premiere bass port allows for the most efficient, fastest air transfer from the cabinet for a clean, powerful low frequency response. The ported enclosure features a MDF cabinet finished with a premium wood-grain polymer veneer and a polymer front baffle. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimise panel vibrations that can colour sound.
Strong, Flexible, Removable Grille: Attaches magnetically for an elegant transition from powerful showstopper to discrete performance piece.
Dramatic Details: Copper anodized trim rings, cast aluminium feet, satin painted baffles and a laser etched logo treatment give the Reference Premiere II series a modern, premium look.
Our Take On Klipsch RP-404C Centre Speaker
Klipsch speakers deliver a dynamic and fast sound which is nothing less than impressive on movies. But there is another big story to tell and that is the subject of sensitivity or speaker efficiency. Most speakers are about 90dB efficiency and in stereo mode and with a modest approach to the volume control does not present any problem for any good amplifier or home theatre receiver. However as surround sound has increased from 5 speakers up to 9 or even 11, so has the demand on the amplifier or home theatre receiver. Combine more speakers with more volume and average efficiency speakers (say 90dB) and your amplifier will run quite hot and go into clipping - a type of distortion.
One solution is to add an extra power amplifier to hook up the front two or three speakers and leave the receiver to run the centre and rear effects speakers. Another solution is to invest in speakers like the Klipsch RP-404C. This speaker is a very efficient 97dB which means you can easily run it with half the power of most other speakers and ideally it should be matched with other Klipsch speakers from the Reference Premiere range. One of the better spec receivers will usually do the job beautifully and run nice and 'cool' even at high output levels. Speak with us to get more details or phone in and arrange a demo.
