About The Rega Planar 1 Plus Turntable

The Rega Planar 1 Plus is just like the Planar 1, plus it has a super convenient phono stage built in. Sporting the same winning combination of style and performance as the regular Planar 1, the Plus avoids having to use an external phono preamp and plugs into the line inputs of any integrated amplifier. What could be simpler?

The new Planar 1 is the most user friendly Rega turntable to date. Now with preset bias force on the brand new RB110 tonearm, the Planar 1 is set up in seconds after unpacking. Simply slide the balance weight onto the rear of the tonearm as far as it will go, remove the stylus guard and start spinning your favourite vinyl.

Rega Planar 1 Plus Turntable

Every single aspect of the Planar 1 has been meticulously designed to improve performance. For the first time the Planar 1 is now running a 24v, low noise, synchronous motor to reduce vibration transfer combined with our brand new RB110 tonearm fitted with Rega's bespoke zero play bearings. Only sharing the drive belt, sub platter and dust cover from the outgoing RP1, this is truly a new turntable for a new era.

If you are looking to get back into vinyl and want serious performance that will last you a lifetime, then look no further.

Phono Stage Built-In: When Rega asked themselves, how do we make the most successful turntable we have ever made sound better, be even easier to use and be more accessible to a wider audience?  The answer was simple; their engineers added a custom designed, high quality, moving magnet phono stage based around the multi-award winning What Hi-Fi? 5 Star Fono Mini.

For the Planar 1 Plus, Rega wanted to optimise this circuit for ultimate performance so they removed the USB interface and used the money saved to improve what was already a stunning disc stage.

The new built in stage offers the ability to connect the Planar 1 Plus directly to almost any system that has a standard line input via a standard phono to phono cable (supplied) or phono to 3.5mm lead. Simply put, there is no need to purchase a standalone phono stage or use an amplifier with a built in phono stage. Your Planar 1 Plus will connect directly to any standard Line Level input such as an Aux, Tape, Tuner or CD input.

There are obvious audio advantages to housing the phono stage directly beneath the tonearm. The carefully shielded tonearm wire is soldered directly to the phono stage, which prevents any unwanted pick up via the usual external cable between the arm and phono stage.

Engineered For Sound: The Planar 1 has a brand new Rega RB110 tonearm which is made in-house and built with the new Rega designed, bespoke, zero play bearings with ultra-low friction performance (Patent Pending). New bias assembly and integrated arm clip. Includes automatic bias adjustment negating the need for the user to set bias, making this the most ‘Plug & Play’ turntable Rega have ever manufactured. New ergonomically, re-designed and stiffer headshell for improved usability and appearance. A Rega Carbon cartridge is supplied and fitted as standard so you don't need to worry about mucking around with tiny wires and screws. Even the balance weight is 'Plug & Play' making the time between unpacking and playing even simple. The Carbon is above average performance and significantly ahead of the competition at this price. There is also a brand new Thermoset, matt laminated plinth with vastly improved appearance and new ergonomically positioned on/off switch located on the underside as well as new improved feet to increase stability and reduce vibration transfer.. Two stunning plinth finishes available, matt black and matt white.

This is the first entry level Rega turntable to use a 24v, synchronous AC motor with a new motor PCB and aluminium pulley that offer low noise and better speed stability. The re-designed brass main bearing delivers improved fit and removes stress on the bearing itself whilst minimising the transfer of potential energy. (Patent pending). The new, 23mm, higher mass, phenolic platter with improved flywheel effect for improved speed stability is ultimately supported on this bearing.

Rega Planar 1 Plus Review

What Hi-Fi? Magazine wasted no time in awarding the Rega Planar 1 the top score of 5 out of 5 Stars. Here are a few snippets from their review.

It is hard to come to any other conclusion than that Rega have raised the bar here in almost every respect.

Probably the finest test of any product is how long we use it once having already come to our conclusion. In this case, the Planar 1 is still playing and proving it can turn its hand to Dmitri Shostakovich as adeptly as it does Toots and the Maytals or Charlie Parker. Even as an entry-level turntable, this is the kind of player that could feasibly be the last of your system’s components you’d feel necessary to upgrade.

Verdict: In these times bereft of certainty, there is far worse you could do than to close the curtains, settle in your favourite armchair and spin a few records on the new Rega Planar 1.

About Rega

Roy Gandy started making Turntables in the early 1970's when vinyl was at its peak of popularity! He became a part time retailer and found he had to spend a ridiculous amount of time repairing new turntables before his conscience and common sense would allow him to sell them to others! Out of frustration and a strong feeling he could do better, the Planar turntable was born. By 1973 he was making turntables in the evening. In 1975 the Planar 2 was developed and quickly took its place in the market as the finest budget turntable. In June 1977 HI-FI News and Record Review announced the Planar 3 saying 'The complete unit is worth a look'! Rega's usual blaze of non-publicity.

Engineering has always been the beating heart of Rega Research, a company obsessed with specialist materials, tolerances and accuracy. From day one every Rega product has been designed to achieve the best musical performance and deliver a lifetime of musical enjoyment at an affordable price.

To this day, Rega remains a dedicated British manufacturer and now employs over 140 people selling to 46 different countries. Rega manufacture a vast range of hi-fi products including amplifiers, phono stages, cartridges, CD players, loudspeakers, and a wide range of accessories, to name but a few. Rega designs and assembles every product by hand in their custom-built 38,000 square foot facility in the South East of England, using a team of highly trained and highly skilled technicians who take great pride in the work they do.

Our Take On The Rega Planar 1 Plus Turntable

We have been fans of Rega for around 40 years and we don't think there are more than one or two 'old-timers' that may lay claim to selling the product longer than we have. But lets be frank. Roy Gandy has been selling his turntables for over 45 years and not just one know and again. Sales around the world are staggering. You will struggle to find a review anywhere that bags or discredits the brand. They are extremely well engineered and therefore give their owners and those who sell them hours of pleasure. Plus they sound amazing...and that's why we sell them! Believe what you read because it is all true.
