About The REL HT1508 Predator Subwoofer
The REL HT/1508 Predator Subwoofer is designed specifically for Home Theatre use where large scale dynamics and accuracy are prime considerations. It features a proprietary 15" CarbonGlas™ Driver and a powerful 800 Watt Class D Amplifier to deliver the sort of low end thrills a good home theatre setup always deserves but seldom delivers.
All right! This REL Subwoofer is specifically designed for flapping your trousers, or whatever else isn’t thoroughly tied down. It isn’t just about making bomb blasts & volcano eruptions sound more realistic though. Home Theatre sound can and should at times be light, playful, funny and at other times terrifying or awe-inspiring. The HT/1508 can do all of this and more. Get ready - this beast of a subwoofer has some serious punch, it’s not called Predator for nothing, and it's coming to get you.
Redefining Power & Value
Predator is devastating when used in dedicated high powered home theatre applications, but also transforms the serious gamer’s experience and partners beautifully with active wireless speakers for music reproduction. HT/1508 is a unique combination of lightweight, modern 15” CarbonGlas™ (380mm) driver, coupled to a powerful 800 Watt linear power supply amp that runs cool, producing extraordinary dynamics and consumes merely 20 watts at idle. Internally, REL developed specially adapted home theatre input filters that produce extremely flat bass down into the low 20 Hertz range.
REL designed the driver of the 1508 to be light and accurately reactive; theatre sound can and should be at times fast on its feet and at times dramatic and awe-inspiring. Deep bass that reacts quickly and effortlessly to these changes during a film creates a much more satisfying experience of the medium than typical theatre subs can supply.
As with the entire HT range, Predator’s industrial design wastes nothing on ornamentation for its own sake and delivers a simple, yet satisfying, design that borrows themes of line-grained aluminium contrasting with a sophisticated, polished top surface. Instead of mere feet, Predator uses full depth rails necessary to better cope with the force it produces.
Design Is Everything
REL are known for building beauty in a category not known for it. But their designs do more than look good. Substance is fully integrated into Predator. If you see a design element, it accomplishes a function as well as delivers style. The 25mm top plate, beautifully finished in 5 coats of hand-rubbed lacquer, serves to damp vibration in the cabinet below. Within, a massive windowpane brace damps both side and inner cabinet walls, yet also does double duty supporting the heavy magnet of the driver. And the attractive (but easily wiped clean) cabinet surface looks like expensive line-grained aluminium, but instead is a tough, sexy composite that serves to keep costs reasonable.
Size Still Matters
At 15” and sporting 3” of fore and aft stroke, the core of Predator’s amazing performance centres around its driver. Film sound and music both benefit from quickness; fast drivers result in accurately tracing music’s peaks or a movie’s explosive special effects with equal ease.
Using a bonded composite of lightweight glass fibre for the cone’s body with an ultra-light carbon fibre centre mass, REL’s designers have been able to pare excess weight away. The 1508’s cone weighs far less than REL’s 10” driver of just a few short years ago. And this driver is built to last, with high quality materials throughout such as natural butyl surrounds that won’t dry out and fail like foam surrounds can.
Power Corrupts: 800 Watts Corrupts Beautifully
Some may wonder why so much power is needed, but 800 watts RMS loafing along means Predator is rarely stressed. When the scene demands, having more than enough power means that the incredible output levels are delivered safely without risk of damage. The amplifier actually outputs peaks of around 1200 watts which makes for massive output. A traditional power supply is used with a huge 1.2KW transformer coupled to a Class D output stage meaning it runs efficiently. Predator demands only 20 watts of power consumption at idle; so little that most will simply leave it on all the time except when they’re on holiday.
Stand & Deliver: Stacked Predators
HT/1508 Predator offers one more uniquely REL innovation. For truly over the top performance, Predators are designed to be stacked up to three (3) units high using included REL Couplers™ that connect lower units to upper units. These solid, milled aluminium couplers bolt securely to each sub and along with the substantial rails on the underside of each cabinet create an extremely heavy, sturdy tower of bass. When used in stereo stacks (6 total, 3 per side) it represents over 7000 watts of peak power forcing (6) x 15” drivers to give their utmost in the service of breathtaking bass delivered in oceanic torrents. Prepare to be swept away.
Optional Wireless: HT-Air™
Zero Compression Wireless Compatible: There is wireless and there is REL wireless. REL are well-known for having the finest wireless purpose-built systems in the entire component audio world. Though HT-Air™ is affordable, it retains REL’s corporate fixation on zero compression and maximum dynamics. HT-Air is designed to leave old fashioned Bluetooth-based systems in the dust, delivering latency in the 16-20 millisecond range. This permits owners to place your HT/1205 where it works best for you without resorting to unsightly cables being strewn across the landscape of your living room, all while retaining REL’s category-leading super-fast wireless.
REL was founded in 1990 in Bridge End, Wales, UK by Richard E Lord and for the last 30 plus years REL has been developing better and better subwoofers designed to bring the ultimate bass response to your stereo or home theatre system, regardless of budget.
But lots of companies make subwoofers, so what makes REL special? Well for starters, they ONLY make subwoofers, whereas almost every other company make a range of products, including subwoofers. You can guess which company pays subwoofer development the most attention. Also most REL subwoofers are designed for music systems and have two very unique features. The first is the High Level Input which brings the signal in from the amplifier’s speaker outputs so the signal your subwoofer is seeing is the same as the one your speakers are seeing. This means the subwoofer has a much better chance of sounding like an extension of your speakers.
The second unique feature is the lightning fast filters which REL have developed which allow REL subwoofers to be as quick as your speakers. To illustrate, a typical loudspeaker has a response time of 4ms (milliseconds), whereas most subwoofers have a response time between 37ms & 80ms. No wonder most subwoofers sound as slow as a wet week. By contrast the response times of a REL Subwoofer vary between 9ms for the Serie T, 7ms for the Serie S and a loudspeaker-equalling 4ms for the Reference series. On top of that, REL have some of the lightest most rigid cones found on any sub and some of the most powerful amplifiers, all housed in uniquely braced cabinets that ensure no cabinet resonances of any kind and no turbulence or noise inside the cabinet. Last, but certainly not least, REL subwoofers are some of the most harmoniously designed and downright good looking subwoofers on the planet, ensuring it’s not just the bass response that brings a smile to your face.

Our Take On The REL HT1508 Predator Subwoofer
Hmmm. They call it Predator. Sounds friendly. And in many ways that’s exactly what the REL HT/1508 is – friendly. It’s easy to hook up and configure, it’s nicely styled to blend in, has the great option of going wireless to accommodate pesky doorways and you always have the option of stacking multiple HT/1508’s for maximum effect. Then there’s the other side of the Predator, the one that leaves you in no doubt what gargantuan rumbles are happening down low. The side that will remodel your décor and move your furniture around if provoked. The side you secretly wish annoyed your neighbours even more than it does. The side you really wanted, all along.
